Abstract

In 14 exemplary of the corpus of the early medieval illuminated manuscripts called "beatus" by contain “The Commentary on the Apocalypse" attributed to Beatus of Liebana, are preserved each very interesting maps. AlI they present certain geographical and literary tradition, therefore is thought about a same origin, that it could be a map included in the first exemplary of the beatus, issued at the a.776, unfortunately already disappeared. We analyze here the possible origins of this first map that, near the contents in a manuscript with works of Orosio and lsidoro (Albi Municipal Library) and in other with works of Isidoro (Library Vaticana), they are considered as the most ancient maps than are preserved by be the three only previous to the a. 800. We treat hear about tire African north author Ticonio (and to others to him related), whose work influenced much the author of these Commentaries, as is being demonstrated. The simultaneous presence of the Byzantine in the African north and in the Hispania of the VIlth to VIllth centuries, that also we analyze, it could facilitate much the arrival to the Beaus of Liebana library of an illuminated copy of the work of Ticonio, the inspirer of the text and even of some illumination of their Commentaries
