Abstract

This study attempts to show an integral part of the history of mentalities, in this case the religiousness of Cartagena at a specific moment, during a fixed period. The subject under study is the beliefs and religious manifestation of the people and of society, and falls within a field which even today has still not been developed far. The method used is predominantly qualitative. Thus, we will analyse thie various forms of consecrating space and surroundings - parishes, convents. hermitages, the role and meaning of the bell, the presence of altars and images - which surrounded men of the time, together with the different dedications which precisely defined their cult. Also, we will set the main external manifestations both in terms of missions or preaching and in terms of celebrations and religious processions, with specific representations and characteristics, such as might be, fundamentally, the rogation ceremonies, which demonstrate man’s need to fall back on God when faced with problems in everyday life. Ah this is situated within the context of the prevailing religious concepts in l8th century of Spain
