Abstract

This paper explores the evolution of Lorca town during the first half of the fourteenth century. Its strategic emplacement as a fortress against the Islam would affect its layout, growth, economy, taxation aspects and even the inhabitants’ walk of life, as well as making it look as an appealing target to the powerful. The analysis of unpublished documents, together with other recent publications, has led to a new depicting of the village and its council, especially with respect to its social liaisons, i.e.: relationship with the Aragon and Castilian kingdoms and with the nobility -Don Juan Manuel- as well as the peculiar links established with the Muslim Kingdom of Granada.
