Abstract

Mediaeval Chronicles provide very valuable information in order to study the different images and representations that the Power projected of itself. In this sense, War constitutes a topic of special interest, since it was one of the phenomena that received more attention and one of the principal sources of legitimization of the royal institution. So, the Gran Crónica de Alfonso XI has been analyzed not by its documentary value, but on the basis of the different discourses that the Monarchy was transmitting related to warfare. On one hand, it was seeking to justify and to legitimize the different campaigns that the Crown was supporting, and, on the other hand, it tried to idealize the fi gure of Alfonso XI in base of his military policy. The correlations past - present would be a key piece in this ideological structure.
