Abstract

This paper clarifies two perspectives under which Saint Augustine philosophically explores the musical experience. The first one is formal aesthetics, which is based on neoplatonism. Here he develops aspects about the numerical order of time; in this, the beauty of music is referred to as unity. In the second perspective, material aesthetics, he inserts elements of the Judeo-Christian tradition and related this beauty to the truth contained in the words of the musical pieces. Augustine inserts both perspectives into the project of elevation of man to God.
