Abstract

Knowledge about the gender history in Majorca at the Middle Ages is a developing field, for which this study intends to be a valid contribution to know the daily life of medieval women from some specific goods, such as jewelry and other ornaments. These pieces provide interesting information to discern the dominant aesthetic and taste, while contributing to knowledge about social and cultural aspects from that age. The research focuses on the analysis of documentary sources, inventories of goods of the deceased, kept in the Arxiu del Regne de Mallorca, to study the types of personal ornaments and other common issues arising from the materials, techniques and the location of these precious assets in the medieval house. This approach allows us to know the symbolic value of these goods acquired in the Majorcan society as signs of power and prestige, and its clear connection to the cultural context of that time.
