EL VALOR DE LA GEOGRAFÍA EN LA EDUCACIÓN: EL CONOCIMIENTO PODEROSO EN GEOGRAFÍA (POWERFUL GEOGRAPHY) Y LA EDUCACIÓN GEOGRÁFICA

Resumen

Los debates sobre el valor del conocimiento geográfico han generado una creciente discusión académica sobre el papel de la Geografía en la educación de las personas. Desde el campo de la educación geográfica, el concepto del conocimiento poderoso (powerful knowledge) ha planteado la necesidad de revalorizar la formación geográfica de una persona en educación primaria, secundaria o universitaria, en tanto permita acceder a un tipo de conocimiento que trasciende su experiencia de vida diaria, así como participar crítica y activamente en los problemas contemporáneos. El presente artículo desarrolla de esta nueva corriente de pensamiento geográfico, partiendo de un análisis teórico del concepto de conocimiento poderoso propuesto por Michael Young y su relevancia actual, determinando los elementos y características del conocimiento poderoso geográfico, y así reivindicando la importancia del aporte de comunidades de especialistas y la disciplina en la educación del estudiante, que va más allá de sólo formar para el empleo, preparando ciudadanos críticos y creativos, que adquieren un conocimiento geográfico para incidir en sus realidades socioambientales. El artículo concluye con una propuesta curricular-pedagógica sobre cómo formar a nuestros estudiantes en una visión disciplinar para obtener formas de conocimiento más especializadas que influyan en su vida personal y social.
