Abstract

The kind of flamenco we now consider current, was coming together in the early years of the nineteen-sixties when a strong neo-classical movement was gathering momentum, and an intense reworking of the genre was about to shake flamenco to its very roots. At no previous time, since the dawn of early flamenco, had there been such a degree of renovation in such a short space of time. Flamenco dance has become an important cultural product, and is no longer limited to an elite circle of followers, but rather it has become a “World Cultural Heritage” as proclaimed by the UNESCO. In this essay, we summarize the principal elements of change that have given flamenco dance a new identity, this specialty being that which most symbolizes “flamenco” for the entire world.
