Abstract

Two phases of use are distinguished in the necropolis, whose characteristics and ritual aspects are studied for either phase, finding christian funerary cult with probable gnostic rooting. The founding of the cemetery runs parallel to the installation of a hydraulic plant including an aqueduct, pool and baths which should not date back beyond mid IV C. encompassing trade and economic flourishing of the harbour. The end of this scenario entails removal of the tombs and is connected with vandal raids during the first half of V C. a finding is reported -by the end of the second phase of the cemetery- of a hoard or little treaSur e which includes vandal coinage, which poses the likelyhood of its connection with the settling process of Byzantine power in the area.
