Abstract

In 1906 the Junta de Museus of Barcelona acquired a Byzantine belt buckle from the painter Antonio Estruch which he had purchased during his long stay in Palestine. Estruch visited all the biblical sites to prepare drawings which he used for his paintings in the live of Jesus. The article deals with the history of the object as well as with the archaeological study of the typo-chronological order and geographical of such belt buckles –D7 según Schulze-Dörrlamm– in the Mediterranean area, at the same time a brief review of findings of similar brooches of Byzantine origin on the Iberian Peninsula is given. Finally, Estruch’s belt buckle is seen in the context of the site of its probable origin, Bet Guvrin.
