Abstract

The Roman city of Carthago Nova preserves in its urban layout some of the most complete and representative examples of the domestic architecture of Hispania as far as tipology and ornamental decoration it refers. This paper includes the studies made so far as well as new results obtained in the last years of archaeological interventions in the city, which have allowed the panorama of the private building to be completed. To do so, we will start from some premises which will lead to its understanding and interpretation: the chronological amplitude, the planimetric adjustment to the topography of the city, the techniques of execution used and the relation or balance between the decoration and the space, between the ornamental program and the function of the room with it decorated.
