Abstract

This paper offers an overview of the Roman domestic cult, since its origins during the formation of Roman society up to the time in which the expansion of Christianity determined its decline. Particular attention has been focused on the gods of the family and on the areas devoted to the domestic cult within the house. Classical texts and archaeological remains, especially those preserved in the Vesuvian cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, offer the most eloquent testimonies to study these intimate beliefs of the Romans. In spite of the large scholar attention devoted to the Roman domestic cult many question are still open.
