HYGIENE REGULATIONS AS A TOOL FOR THE CONSERVATION OF PROTECTED SPECIES: THE BUTTERFLY RAY (Gymnura altavela)
Abstract
The illegal commercialization of wings (pectoral fins) of specimens of the protected butterfly ray species has been detected on three occasions. The specimens had been cut into pieces (the wings were separated from the rest of the body in the boats), a practice that is incompatible with the hygiene requirements for fishing and aquaculture products and which is justified in this work. European fishing regulations to prevent fraudulent trade in protected shark species prohibit the beheading and fin cutting of specimens before the first sale, but this regulation is not applicable to the other large group of elasmobranchs, the rays. Strict compliance with this precept of the hygiene regulations would prevent the fraudulent marketing of wings of the protected butterfly ray species.
