Abstract

Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is the most common acquired valvular disease in small breed older dogs that is responsible for congestive heart failure Echocardiography is the method of choice to make the diagnosis, classify patients, and monitor treatment. The aim of this study is to evaluate the value of pulsed Doppler mitral flow and tissue Doppler to assess cardiac function in dogs with chronic degenerative mitral disease, stage C. Material and methods: Five dogs with MMVD stage C and 5 healthy dogs of similar ages and weights were included in the study. Data about dogs identification and the following echocardiographic parameters were included in the study: LA/Ao ratio, transmitral flow velocities (E, A and E/A ratio), mitral annulus velocities (lateral and medial) and radial short-axis velocities by tissue Doppler (S´, E´ and A´), E/A ratio E´ and functionality parameters of the right ventricle (systolic excursion of the plane of the tricuspid annulus-TAPSE-, and tissue Doppler of the lateral tricuspid annulus (S´, E´ and A´)). Results: eleven of the 19 parameters evaluated were different from significantly between healthy and diseased animals: elevation of the AI/Ao ratio, Vmax E, E/A ratio, E´ in the three regions, S´ (lateral and medial), E/E´ ratio, E´ and S´ of the ventricle. Conclusions: the elevation of tissue Doppler parameters indicates that the functionality of both the left and right ventricles is maintained in dogs with stable MMVD stage C. These dogs present very high left ventricular filling pressures (Vmax E and E/A ratio).
