Classification of Epilepsy and Epileptic Syndromes: a Pending Task for Veterinary Medicine
Abstract
At present there is no universally accepted terminology veterinary epileptology, why usually apply the concepts issued by the International League Against Epilepsy. Classify epileptic syndromes is essential to unify criteria, grouped seizure disorders, generate statistics, mark general and particular trends and compare epidemiological studies. In Human Medicine, current classifications are in phase of reconsideration of the classical concepts, and still are not installed in the scientific community. The great difficulty of Veterinary Medicine lies in the diagnosis. Epileptic disorders in dogs and cats are similar to those of humans, and it may be possible to apply the same classification criteria. To achieve this, should develop a detailed description of the epileptic seizures carried out by expert neurologists, and additional training of non-specialists veterinary to provide an accurate diagnosis. It is also imperative to have adequate diagnosis tools, as electroencephalogram or sophisticated images, that allow differentiation between epileptic and non-epileptic seizures and recognition of structural pathologies. It is not a simple task, and develop an appropriate classification can be a hard work, which neccesarily implies a multicenter and consensual work. But is essential to unify criteria and to compare experiences.
