STUDY OF THE THOROUGHBRED HORSE COAT IN SPAIN

Abstract

A study on the Thoroughbred population registered in the Spanish Stud-book from 1944 to 1988 has been carried out; 16042 individuals (6740 males and 9302 females) have been analyzed. The study on the coat allows us to determine that, in the spanish population of Thoroughbred, bay are the most abundant, with a percentage of 68.7%, followed by chestnut (26,6%) and grey horses (3,8%). Another coats (berry, skewbald, roan and black) symbolice only 0,85%. The relevant stallions during study years are bay and chestnut.
