Abstract

The samples used in the experiment were five types of by-products: straw, straw supplemented with urea, straw treated with urea, straw treated with urea+NaOH, and citrus by-product. The dry matter degradability of each by-product was determined by in vitro fermentation with ruminal fluid of goat. Rumen fluids from goats fed with two different diets: straw or alfalfa hay. The materials were incubated at 39ºC for 12, 24, 36, 48 y 72 h with each rumen fluid type. At each time, the dry matter disappearance was measured. The inoculum source significantly (P<0.001) influenced in vitro fermentation. The lowest values of dry matter degradation were observed with the ruminal fluid from goats fed with straw. The inoculum type x incubation time interaction was significant (P<0.001), thus an increased level of average dry matter degradation between 12 and 24 h of incubation was the marker for values observed with the ruminal fluid from goats fed with alfalfa hay. In addition, the total concentrations of volatile fatty acids and the molar proportions of each individual acid in the rumen liquor at 48 h of incubation were measured. The highest values of concentrations of volatile fatty acids were observed with the ruminal fluid from goats fed alfalfa hay. In conclusion, the quality of diet of donor animals of ruminal fluid influenced dry matter degradation and fermentation end-products.
