Abstract

There are three basic pilars that support every literary work and to these must the critic refer when he tries to catch a glimpse of and describe the features that define the work: the author, the reader and the work itself. However, not wanting lo take this statement as a cathegoric principle that should neccessarily inspire all literaly investigation, this work has resorted to those three pilars and to the function that each on of them has, considering it to be virtually the most general and complete method, able to fit the complex and heterogenous poetical world of Borges. The brilliant argentine writer consisders that the poet' s mission is to transform not only reality and the world that surrounds him (to change everyday life into poetry) but also his ownself (the poet as the human being able to be other men, able lo imagine other lives); for the reader a more creative than receptive function is reserved (to give live and meaning lo the texts conceived and materialized by the author, in which way he becomes his ally, his accomplice); his poetry has a revealing function, nearly magical: it resumes the true idendity of the creator (the «maker»). it's varied elements draw the animical outline of the man who dedicated his whole life to it. The poetical «summa» of Borges will finally discover (he human being who created it: «Llego a mi centro, /a mi álgebra y mi clave, /a mi espejo. Pronto sabré quién soy
