Abstract

A limnological study of the Ponuga River (Province of Veraguas, Republic of Panama) is carried out in order to determine the biological quality through the analysis of invertebrates collected in its waters. Among the group of these organisms were some freshwater sponges, their gemmules and their colonies. The observation of these gemmules under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) allowed the identification of the species Radiospongilla cerebellata (Bowerbank 1863). The first record of the species for Panama is provided, being, in turn, the second for the Neotropics. Physico-chemical analysis of the waters of the Ponuga River is added as a contribution to the knowledge of the species. The successive records of the species in recent years and in different biogeographical areas would indicate that its distribution could be broader.
