Abstract

The lesser black-backed gull, Larus fuscus (Linnaeus, 1758), is a polytypical species whose taxonomic status is still being reviewed by some scientists. The nominal subspecies Larus fuscus fuscus or Baltic gull is considered a rarity in Spain. However, during the decade every year some individuals are observed, fact that has led to update the existing information on its spatial and temporal distribution in Spain, using data of both, ringed birds and birds without ring approved and/or under consideration of the Rarity Committee of the Spanish Society of Ornithology. Our results suggest that Spain is a wintering area for a very small part of the population, especially Malaga area, and that the period with the highest probability of sightings is from November to March.
