Abstract

A filamentous cyanobacteria was observed in plankton samples from Hanabanilla Reservoir (Central Cuba). Based on optical microscopy study, the Cuban specimens correspond with Limnoraphis robusta (Parakutty) Komárek et al. (Oscillatoriales) known from Africa, Brazil, India, Guatemala and North America. According to the literature consulted this taxon was not previously reported from Cuban freshwaters. The colonies of the Cuban population form clusters not the typical mats described for the species. The specimens are also characterized by smaller cells and trichomes. The present paper offers description of the Cuban population and data about its taxonomy, geographical distribution and ecology.
