Abstract

The first data are presented on the ecology of three macrophyte species widely distribuited in the Mar Menor lagoon (SE Spain). The annual cicle. distribution and biomass was studied during an entire year. Twenty sampling stations were selected in a seasonal extensive study by means of dredging. and another sampling station was intented t« study intensively the community (monthly samples). The results show a seasonal development for the three species. The biomass and LA1 followed a similar pattern in the course of the year. with increasing values from spring to summer and a declive in autumm and winter. Caulerpa prolifera seems the dominant species in the Mar Menor; on the contrary, the Cymodocea nodosa beds are suffering a reduction in surface occupied.
