Abstract

The valley of the Genal river is located in the western portion of Málaga province (Spain). The valley is a natural corridor that connects several natural protected areas (Natural Parks of Sierra de las Nieves, Grazalema and Los Alcornocales). As three phytogeographical units (Aljíbico -siliceous sandstones-, Rondeño -limestone and dolomites- and Bermejense -peridotite-) meet here, a great plant diversity is found, showing a group of endangered taxa such as . Other taxa has chorological value such as Hypericum androsaemum, Davallia canariensis Cystopteris viridula or Dryopteris affinis subsp. Affinis. Endemic from Ronda Mountain Ranges, in the valley grow , all of them protected or included in plant endangered red-lists. Other endemisms (not protected) are Arenaria retusa, Brachypodium gaditanum, Helictotrichon filifolium arundanum, Linaria platycalix, Saxifraga bourgaeana, Silene inaperta serpentinicola and Staehelina Baetica. Ancient human development has contributed to the increase of the diversity in the valley, due to the traditional land use and management that has contributed to a exceptional mosaic landscape. Nowadays, several aggressive projects (hydraulic and real-state) threat the valley, so protection is needed as Natural Park or Special Conservation Zone in the Natura 2000 European Net (Directive 92/43 CEE).
