Abstract

Himanthalia elongate is a brown seaweed biennial and dioecious very common in the Galician coasts, where is traditionally use as fertilizer and, more recently, as edible seaweed due its remarkably organoleptic and nutritional characteristics. Because the every day increases harvesting of this species from natural populations, its necessary the establishment of exploitation criteria, based on its biology, badly known until now. In order to study the growth and development of H. elongate on Galician coasts, we carry out different field experiments at Barizo (La Coruña) and therefore, we indicate the right procedure to its sustainable explotation.
