Abstract

A phylogenetic analysis of 13 species of Cicindelini of the Iberian Peninsula has been carried out. The analysis places the genus Cephalota as a basal taxon within this group. The species pair Cicindela campestris Linnaeus, 1758 and C. maroccana Fabricius, 1801 show a close relationship as sister taxa. The endangered species Cephalota deserticoloides (Codina, 1931) shows a greater genetic diversity than previously described. The analysis indicates that the species of Cicindelini present in the Iberian peninsula do not constitute a monophyletic group, instead they constitute lineages whose closer relatives are found in other biogeographical regions, in accordance with the hypothesis that estimates the origin of the cicindelid in early periods of the fragmentation of the Gondwana subcontinent.
