Abstract

The main goal of this research conducted in the Municipio de Marinilla, Colombia, was to document the farmers perceptions on climate change and the strategies they use to adapt their production systems to the causes and effects of climatic variability. The used methodology combined quantitative (field data gathering) and qualitative (interviews) techniques. Farmers mention deforestation, use of pesticides and burning as factoes that affect climate change and that are related to the increase in rainfall, changes in the seasonality of dry and wet seasons, soil erosion and mud slides. Farmers have developed and implemented a number of adaptation practices such as living barriers, construction and maintenanace of terraces, increasing soil organic matter, crop and animal diversification, wáter harvesting and seed saving along with some appropiate technologies such as wood stoves, solar dryers and biogas. Many of these techniques have improved the environmental integrity of the farms, the recobvery and valorization of local knowledge, collective innovation, and adoption of new practices, thus strengthening the autnoly of farmers and their organizations.
