Abstract

The holistic management of farming systems is one of the central principles of the agroecology. To accomplish this, it is essential to transcend the reductionist vision prevailing in conventional agricultural sciences. In agroecology, it is needed to have practical tools to evaluate agricultural situations systemically. Unfortunately, there are few concrete tools to perform this task. In this work, it is proposed a new index to measure agrobiodiversity. This index allows the evaluation of the system as a whole. In this index, besides of measuring the richness and abundance of the elements of the system, it is also taken into account their interaction. This allows the evaluation of functional attributes of the agrobiodiversity. Here is shown through simple examples some of the advantages of this new index.
