Abstract

In the early 1980s international NGOs introduced in Nicaragua community sustainable ag- ricutlure development projects. Although the practices were useful but were not recognized by the national research institutions, and agroecology as a science was not known, these practices were widely adopted by hillsisde small farmers. Working in an empirical way, innovative farm- ers enriched the practices mixing traditional ones with more modern alternative ones, leading to prodcutivity improvements and enhancement of the resiliency of heir production systems. Some small farmers sold their products as “organic” but without separting themselves from the movement. Through informal horizontal exchange networks (Campesino a Campesino) farm- ers shared experiences and knowledge. Gradually, small farmers transformed a simple set of “sustainable practices” into a wide agroecological field schoool, perhaps the strongest in Cen- tral America.
