Abstract

In Chile, the small farmers of the Biobío region, particularly those from the Secano Interior have experienced precarious socio-economic conditions for decades. Part of this scenario is the consequence of a set of unsuitable agricultural practices. In 1993 CET was established as a training center with a demonstration farm in the Yumbel municipality. After 20 years of operation an assessment was conducted to evaluate if this farm is sustainable and energy efficient, and if this demonstration farm serves the purposes of an agroecological lighthouse, helping small farmers to start the path towards sustainability, The objectives for the present study are to define the concept of agroecological lighthouse, develop a method to evaluate them, and analyze the CET experience and impact as a lighthouse. By analyzing 19 other agroecological initiatives in Latin America a conceptualization of the concept of an agroecological lighthouse was achieved. MESMIS methodology was proposed as an evaluation tool with some adaptations. The results showed significant progress towards sustainability and therefore can be concluded that the CET experience matches the conceptualization of an agroecological lighthouse proving to be an effective instrument in the training of agroecological principles and to contribute in the sustainable development of small farming communities in the secano region.
