Abstract

The objective of this study is to assess agrarian sustainability from an agro-ecological perspective, taking into account economic, social and environmental aspects. For this, we comparatively evaluate organic and conventional olive oil production in the Los Pedroches region (Córdoba, Spain), using the MESMIS methodology. We are used 17 sustainability indicators; 13 of they have highest values in organic management. The final data show that techniques and technologies used in organic management are better than conventional one, from a global sustainable approach. As a consequence, the organic management of the olive groves and the sale of organic olive oil can be a stimulus to farmers to increase their profits and to preserve the natural resources. The results obtained permit to shed light on certain elements necessary to the design of rural development policies linked to this sector; especially in those areas with a high importance in this crop.
