Dry-land peasant ́s perceptions and strategies aimed to the mitigation of environmental degradation and the effects of climate change in Chile

Abstract

This study describes a number of ecological and socioeconomic problems that directly affects the peasant families that inhabit the called area of “Secano Interior” (Interior dry-land) present in the Biobío region in Chile. These problematic are diverse not only in their origin, but also, in their nature, for reason is that this study proposes an interdisciplinary methodology to approach such multitude of factors. The study also focuses on the strategies adopted and engendered by the peasant families in order to face this dynamic and progressive socio-environmental crisis. These strategies must be observed with care, as they are rooted in time tested materialized knowledge, and that also respond to a more agroecological proposal for the Chilean countryside.
