The state of phytogenetic resources from a seed networks perspective

Abstract

This article presents the concept, importance and problems of landraces. It analyzes the tools, politics, instruments and legal framework available for the conservation of the Phytogenetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (PRFA) in the international, european and national level. It summarises the current situation of the PRFA after the signature of the main agreements in the framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). It presents agroecological proposals in order to conserve the PRFA as a way to overcome the current food crisis, as well as tools than come from Agroecology, such as farmers seed banks to reach food sovereignty and security of peoples. Finally, it makes a brief reflection on the need for a change in the agri-food system and politics for the conservation of the local PRFA.
