Abstract

This text analyzes the food production contribution of Latin American peasants and their contribution to food security in urban and rural areas, despite climate change and the rising costs of energy. This productive potential can be enhanced even more with agroecological approaches that require a participatory process by which principles emerging from research can be translated into practical natural resource management applications relevant to the needs and circumstances of peasants. In order to scale up hundreds of successful agroecological experiences, agrarian policies are needed so that farmers can have access to land, seeds, water, credit, research and extension as well as local markets and just prices.
