Abstract: This article presents an introduction, translation and notes to the chapter on the letters of the Arabic alphabet. This is the first Italian translation of the second chapter of al-Futūḥāt al-makkiyya. This chapter is a very long chapter, which indicates the importance and vastness of the subject that Ibn Ibn ʿArabī wanted to deal with, since while he was writing this chapter he had begun to write a work entitled Kitāb al-mabādī wa-l-gāyāt in which he intended to explain even more extensively the topics dealt with only succinctly in the chapter. This chapter also contains a total of 35 poems (qaṣā'id).

Ibn ʿArabī wrote two manuscripts of this text in his own handwriting, the first begun in Mecca in Hegira 599 and he completed in Damascus in 629, and he begun the second one in Damascus in 632 and he finished in 636, of which a manuscript survives almost intirely in Istanbul.

ER -
